Golden Slippers
The popular singing square dance "Golden Slippers" is sung to the tune of the original
song (1879) by the African-American composer James A. Bland (1854-1911). Bland wrote many
other well-known songs, including "In the Evening by the Moonlight," and "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny"--state song of Virginia until it was retired in 1997 amid some considerable controversy.
He is also famous for adding a fifth string to
the banjo--the "Bland banjo."
